You live in New York City, you work in New York City or you're just a weekend tourist in New York City, whatever the rationale be, you've probably indulged yourself in all kinds of New York pizza. NYC is not beholden to the slice, the to-go box or the sit down wine & dine experience. There is a perfect pizza resolution to every marinara filled query in this doughy town.
The brilliance of Pizza is in it's artistic simplicity and infinite flavor complexity. Every pizza has a story. Let me paint one, you are stuck inside your dumb apartment in quarantine, the girl you have been talking to is stuck inside her Brooklyn apartment too. She just came back to the city and all she craves is New York pizza. She texts you to come over and co-quarantine over pizza and booze (that list is for another time). You could just pick up any pizza because it's pizza but you decide to pick up 4 different pizzas from all over town before heading over. Don't forget to take a shower. I just romanticized a pizza date of the highest order & the list below will make it worth it.
I haven't eaten enough pizza in the City to choose the top ones. This is merely the list of triangular tomato-Mozzarella creation I would trust impressing a girl with. Cheesy much? (pun intended).
JOE'S PIZZA - THE GREENWICH VILLAGE CUSTOM
Joe's is a New York institution revered equally by the natives as well as the tourists. The authentic slice is best enjoyed after a night out in the west village but there is no bad time to enjoy the classic dough-tomato-cheese-pepperoni perfection.
LUIGI'S PIZZA - THE 70's FEEL
Luigi's gives the old school vibe with great ratio of sweetness in the sauce. Adam Sandler and Cole Sprouse ate at Luigi's in the 90's classic Big Daddy. It's the quintessential Brooklyn slice to bring home.
DELLAROCCO'S OF BROOKLYN - THE WHITE SAUCE OF NEAPOLITAN
The coziness of Dellarocco's neighnorhood joint can extend to the couch alongside some great conversation and perfectly paired wine/beer? The white pie layered with smoked buffalo mozzarella, broccoli rabe, sausage, red pepper, garlic, and basil is quarantine worthy according to most.
PRINCE ST. PIZZA - NOT YOUR AVERAGE SPICY SICILIAN
The crispy, spicy, pepperoni filled superlative extravaganza is not any New York slice. It is different yet embodies the blue collar vibe of this city's pizza culture. The signature is their whole pie of Spicy Spring, a square pie topped with spicy fra diavolo tomato sauce, mozzarella, and crispy pepperonis.
LUCALI BROOKLYN - THE LONG QUEUE AT 5
The previous 4 pizza's were enjoyed on the couch in exclusivity and now the quarantine is over! Lucali is for the regular 2nd date with 1st date vibes. Large Pizza, small Calzone, heartfelt laughter and BYOB. Good Times and greatest pizzas.
